Bremer Family Winery is an intimate, old-school Napa experience on Deer Park Road at the base of Howell Mountain. The property is built around a stone winery dating to 1891, originally associated with the early Sutter Home Winery & Distillery, and portions of the building were constructed directly into the mountain to maintain naturally cool storage temperatures. A later cave was excavated into the hillside for additional barrel aging, giving visitors a genuine working-winery setting rather than a tasting room created primarily for tourism.
The standard visit is deliberately simple and personal: a $45 tasting of five current-release wines, with the option to request a cave tour at no additional charge. Bremer’s philosophy emphasizes extended aging, with wines spending close to three years in barrel and potentially several additional years in bottle before release. That means the wines poured can feel more developed than current-vintage releases at wineries that sell much younger wines. Cabernet Sauvignon is central, including Napa Valley, Rutherford, Howell Mountain and vineyard-designated versions, but the portfolio also includes Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Bordeaux-style blends, Chardonnay, rosé and sparkling wine.
Bremer is a particularly good choice for travelers who prefer small, relaxed appointments to highly choreographed luxury hospitality. The owners describe their goal as a personal, informative tasting experience, and the winery remains family-friendly, welcoming children and leashed dogs. There is no regular food program published, so plan meals elsewhere. Because visits are by appointment and the winery sits 2.3 miles up Deer Park Road from the Silverado Trail, it should be treated as a destination stop rather than a spontaneous drive-by tasting.

Planning a day around Bremer Family Winery
Book Bremer before routing the day and allow extra time for Deer Park Road. A natural plan is Bremer plus Viader on or near Deer Park, then return toward St. Helena/Silverado Trail for Rombauer, Charles Krug or another nearby stop. If you request the cave tour, avoid a tightly timed reservation immediately afterward and plan lunch in St. Helena rather than expecting food at the winery.
