Castello di Amorosa is unlike a conventional Napa tasting room. The focal point is a massive, authentically styled Tuscan castle, and visitors should expect to spend a substantial portion of their visit looking at the building itself. Stone courtyards, towers, interior rooms, cellars and underground passages make the property feel as much like a destination attraction as a winery.
A guided tour is especially worthwhile for first-time visitors because it provides access to more of the 136,000-square-foot castle and its underground wine caves and cellars. The walking portion lasts about an hour, and the underground areas remain around 58°F year-round, so comfortable shoes and a light layer are useful even on a warm Napa afternoon. The main tasting room continues the castle theme with vaulted brick ceilings, stonework and Italian-inspired architectural details.
The overall experience is particularly attractive to first-time Napa visitors, couples looking for memorable photographs and groups containing people who may not be deeply interested in wine. Serious wine drinkers can explore reserve and current-release wines, but the castle itself is a major part of why people visit. Unlike a quick tasting-room stop, this is a property where visitors should expect to explore before or after the actual wine tasting.
