A visit to Opus One is one of the more formal and focused tasting experiences in Napa Valley. The Oakville estate is designed around the wine rather than entertainment, with architecture, artwork, vineyards and expansive valley views creating an understated luxury atmosphere. Even the introductory Estate Tasting is hosted rather than self-directed, so visitors should expect conversation with a knowledgeable host rather than simply receiving a flight and being left on their own.
The standard Estate Tasting introduces two vintages of Opus One alongside Overture, the estate's second wine. The host discusses the history behind the partnership that created Opus One, growing conditions for the individual vintages and the winemaking philosophy behind the wines. The tasting itself takes place in a shared environment in the Courtyard Tasting Room and concludes with time on the rooftop terrace overlooking Napa Valley. The standard tasting does not include a winery tour.
Visitors choosing the higher-level Opus One Experience receive a much more private visit, including current and library wines, a personal Estate Ambassador, a winery tour and a culinary accompaniment. At the top end, Art of the Table is essentially a private fine-dining and wine experience lasting approximately 2½ hours. Overall, Opus One is best suited to visitors who want an educational, Cabernet-focused luxury experience and are comfortable with a slower, more structured tasting rather than a casual drop-in stop.
